Lighting control specialist Pharos Architectural Controls is excited to announce that its entry for Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel in the 2024 edition of the MONDO-DR awards has been crowned the winner in the Hotel category.
This is the second consecutive year that a Pharos entry has won at these awards after their success in 2023 with Hallgrímskirkja in the House of Worship category, adding to the ever-growing list of Pharos accolades.
The MONDO-DR Awards recognise and celebrate the best installation projects from around the globe, as determined by a panel of independent and industry judges – drawing on their years of experience.
The winners were announced at a prize-giving ceremony as part of the InfoComm show in Las Vegas. Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel faced stiff competition in the brand-new Hotel category, from the other shortlisted entries, Kwetu Nairobi-Curio Collection by Hilton, Moxy DTLA & AC Hotel and Virgin Hotels Edinburgh.
The new Hotels category enabled entrants the opportunity to submit AV installations within hotel spaces.
Copacabana Palace – situated on the beachfront in the Brazilian capital city of Rio de Janeiro – has been a landmark feature since 1923. As part of a lighting renovation of the façade, a new system has been put in place for lighting control.
A two-universe Designer LPC (Lighting Playback Controller) was specified to fulfil the lighting control element of the design. The system utilises DMX technology, enabling the façade to be changed to different colours, patterns and themes, triggered by an iPad touch interface.
The LPC features individually controllable and independently running timelines and scenes, offering the freedom of real-time manual overrides with the versatility of powerful show control and integration features.
This customisation allows the hotel to celebrate national days and holidays through a visual display, using the façade as the canvas. These include international festivities such as Christmas and New Year, and national events including Carnival. By illuminating the façade, the hotel can be appreciated even during hours of darkness, with its striking architecture explored through light.
Simon Hicks, CEO at Pharos Architectural Controls, commented: “It is a great honour that Pharos has taken the winning position for this first-ever Hotel category at the prestigious MONDO-DR Awards. Pharos technology has been utilised to incredible effect within the lighting design at Copacabana Palace, with vibrant colours and dynamic lighting schemes that truly pay homage to the iconic landmark.”
