Wind Street is a popular location in the heart of Swansea’s city centre. As part of its recent £2m regeneration works, LITE Ltd were hired to deliver a comprehensive new LED lighting scheme that would brighten the area and welcome visitors all year round. LITE has used Pharos controls on all their new remote access, eco-friendly LED lighting designs.
At the top of Wind Street sits the Norman castle, on a knoll above the River Tawe. LITE replaced the previous floodlights with RGBW ColorReach fixtures by ColorKinetics, controlled using a Pharos LPC 1 with 4G remote access.
The existing trees that line Wind Street are also now illuminated with 1,760 large globes from MaxiLED, all controlled by a Pharos LPX 20 controller in a centrally located feeder pillar, also with 4G remote access.
LITE has also been involved in regeneration works on the other side of the Tawe River, including an ambitious redevelopment of the docks, transforming the area into offices, housing, retail and hospitality spaces. A new footbridge linked the old city to this previously industrial space, with those passing over the bridge arriving in the new Ice House Square.
This newly developed area has had linear custom built-in ground lighting installed, with strings or RGB nodes below polycarbonate diffusers. LITE, alongside partner Floodlighting and Electrical Services Ltd, installed 48 new strings of custom length Signify Flex LMX LED nodes. The trees in and around Ice House Square are illuminated by MaxiLED recessed circular uplights. All the lighting in the area is controlled via a Pharos LPC 4 with 4G remote access. There is a Maxilink and receiver situated in each tree, with the transmitter located in the central feeder pillar.
Alongside new street furniture, new road signs and restricted access for vehicles, the new look Wind Street has been a huge success. The upgrades to Wind Street, the Castle and the Ice House Square have played a key role in the city centre’s wider £1bn regeneration project, making Swansea a more attractive place to work, visit and live.
