Flying Fantastic is an aerial fitness and circus skills school with five venues in London, and a flagship base in Union Street, Southwark. Architect Patrick McKinney of BKD Design designed the space, with lighting design, consultancy and supply by Erosphos.
The flagship venue is used as both a professional training and performance space, with two fully equipped studios. The lighting had to be versatile, so that the studios could easily transition from a bright white rehearsal area that adhered to sports safety standards, to a dynamic, dramatic performance space.
The spaces are lit with 30x RGBW linear fixtures. The combination of RGB is used for the theatrical effects, with the 5000K white element used for functional lighting. There are also 8x RGBW PARs used for spot lighting the roof of the arch.
A Pharos TPC is located within the main studio area, with a BPS located at the entrance of the building. The BPS is configured to control both studios with basic on/off/dim functionality. The TPC also controls both studios, but with a range of more advanced control options, including coloured presets and effect sequences.
