Going strong for the last 140 years, Alexandra Palace has been an iconic London venue with a rich history. Lovingly known as ‘Ally Pally,’ the building has survived two fires and undergone two major refurbishments since 1873.
2017 consisted of the third major restoration with its own project to light up the 70m tall mast at Alexandra Palace as a “beacon” for the refurbishment works ongoing to the East side of the Palace. Given the masts history with respect to a television broadcast, the final installation was to be in full “technicolour”.
Previously the tower was an unlit structure of the building, however, the instructions from the brief were to showcase the structure whilst allowing the lighting to change and be flexible according to the special date or event.
Ridge Designs were commissioned to light the mast as part of the site-wide refurbishment. Architainment lighting was selected to support the lighting project, supplying a Pharos TPC for control.
The mast is lit by 8 RGBW LED floodlights and allows full control of the masts lighting either in two groups (top and bottom) or by predefined scenes making use of distinct colours for each part of the mast, rotating colour schemes, colour pulse, and colour chase.
With each luminaire fully DMX controlled, each fixture can operate independently or as part of a group.
The grade II listed building is an integral part of the fireworks festival and the mast provides an additional focal point during this prestigious event.
