Pharos was approached by Ryan Rolph of Tryka to supply controls and support for the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival, which ran 10th – 15th February 2017.
e-Luminate is a contemporary arts festival, inviting residents and visitors to discover the richness and diversity of Cambridge’s iconic buildings and public spaces in quite literally “a new light”. Venues all over the city are involved, showing light installations created by local and international artists. The goal of the festival is to connect science, technology and arts through a series of installations, activities, talks and concerts.
Since 2013, the Festival has commissioned and produced nearly 50 different projects, in collaboration with technical partners Hawthorn and Light Motif, ranging from ambitious projection mapping to smaller light art pieces. The theme for the 2017 e-Luminate Cambridge Festival was ‘Play’, to reflect the Festival’s interactive, fun and playful nature.
Some members of the Pharos team came in to program the dynamic lighting of the Guildhall façade. Lighting design was by Lora Kaleva, Sarah Alsayed and Colin Ball of BDP, and Pharos supplied an LPC 2 for control, mounted in a temporary IP65 enclosure. It was project managed by Lawrence Hayes of Debbas UK.
The façade maintained a beautiful, subtle base effect which was overtaken every five minutes with one of 12 lively dynamic light effects. There were also custom override preset effects to be triggered during the launch event when the Mayor of Cambridge opened the festival.
Thousands attended the festival and it was considered by all to be a huge success, invigorating the city and inspiring its visitors.
