LivingProjects have installed a Pharos LPC X to control the new canopy lighting at the Admirant building in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The permanent installation – with 1280 custom fixtures – is opening with a special interactive show called Don’t Break The Sound Barrier for Eindhoven’s upcoming annual light art festival Lightfestival GLOW.
The 750m2 awning – attached to the building at a height of 11 metres – was designed by researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology. It alleviates nuisance wind in neighbouring streets caused by the presence of the 105m tall tower in an otherwise flat landscape.
Ellen de Vries at The Lux Lab designed an interactive display for the installation during GLOW. Visitors are encouraged to make sounds, like singing or clapping, while close to the installation in order to influence the light patterns and discover hidden effects. Acoustic engineer Klundert Muziek Oisterwijk designed a system to feed data from an array of microphones to the LPC X via the analog inputs of a RIO 80.
Certain peaks in sound will trigger different effects, with the specific colours and patterns varying depending on the range of sound. This means the installation can continuously create exciting new patterns. Pharos show control allows for manual overrides, and a preset ensures that interesting patterns play even when limited sounds are available.
Lightfestival GLOW features projects from famous national and international light artists, each interpreting this year’s theme ‘The Source’. Over 30 projects are arranged along a freely accessible walking route through Eindhoven city centre, opening Saturday 11th November.
