Bournemouth Council has spent £4m on its Seafront Strategy, the first phase of which was to regenerate and reinvigorate the popular Pier Approach area with new lighting.
Colourful low energy lighting displays have been installed to transform Pier Approach into a welcoming, vibrant space that encourages visitors to extend their visits after dark. Pharos controllers support the lighting design by Michael Grubb Studio.
A prominent feature of the installation is Urbis Schréder’s lit timber columns, designed to evoke Bournemouth’s famous pine trees. These blend seamlessly into the landscape during the daytime and illuminate the area at night. The real-time clock in the Pharos controller calculates the time of sunset each day and triggers an automatic lighting change.
All the bespoke LED fittings for the columns are complemented by dedicated Pharos control equipment. A Pharos LPC 2 provides standard lighting themes, and a Pharos TPC is used for colour change override sequences for special events.
